• Career Guidance centres to prepare students to make informed career decisions through awareness and understanding of their personal qualities/strengths that contribute to success in higher education or their chosen career pathways.
• Outcomes of the Program: Career Guidance support extends to students in classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 attaining basic career awareness and understanding of their interest and aptitude.

Highlights:

• The programmes will be implemented phase-wise, for the AY 2021-22, Class 11 and 12 students will be benefited and then from the upcoming academic year 2022-23, program will be extended to Class 9 and 10 students.
• Holistic curriculum & syllabus and textbook contents along with the grade appropriate worksheets have been prepared in partnership with the expert partners for the Class 9-12 students.
• The training programmes are organized for the teachers which are participatory, need based and target oriented.
• The teachers actively engaged in inquisitive activities during the training programmes to be a career facilitator for student’s learning. Trained teachers to facilitate the classroom learning activities for students by following different modalities and approaches (Hi-Tech Labs, SMART Classroom, Generic group activities in the regular classrooms etc).
• Career Guidance portal aggregates content on careers, colleges, vocational institutes, examinations and scholarships.
• It will Improve transition from school to higher education and workforce. In-school mentoring support will be provided to all the students through govt school alumni and expert resource persons.
• Necessary tracking mechanisms to be developed for tracking Student's Application and Progress.

Feedback:

• Group/Individual Mentoring sessions are organized once in every month, preferably on Saturdays and HMs facilitate the sessions.
• Students are sensitized through the scholarship drives on helping them to apply to different scholarships to pursue their higher education dreams.

 Highlights:

• Y. Kumar, Joint Director Training (SCERT) inaugurated the State Level Spoken English Training at Kinathukaduvu, Coimbatore. Dr. D. Margaret Emily, Deputy Director coordinated the programme.
• Raja , Principal DIET, Coimbatore and Geetha, CEO, Coimbatore participated in the inauguration of State Level Spoken English Training
• The training halls were virtual rooms, where wifi facility was provided in the classroom.
• Online Pre-test, post test was administered to the teachers.
• The demo videos were followed by the debriefing of each video by the resource person
• The class room transcations were through group discussion, demonstration, role play, dialogues, ice-breakers, etc.
• These plans consist of three important pedagogical steps CTC, commencement, Transaction and conclusion
• Each plan consists of 3 activities to engage the students
• Each plan starts with a general conversation to enhance the Spoken English Skill
• Each activity motivates students to participate actively
• Encourages direct method in teaching English as second language

Feedback: 

• The training started with an Ice breaker activity which was about getting to know one another before going into the programme.
• The videos were about General Instruction to the teachers, on listening and speaking.
• Activity based learning using words, phrases and sentences.
• Sequence to be followed in commencement, transaction and conclusion activity.
• Introduction to the plan was given for 4^th std to 9^th std that is from beginning till the end of the period or class.
• A template was shown and we had to read a transaction about synonyms and antonyms. The participants were grouped and one among them enacted as a teacher and others as students.
• A video on story telling about developing a story was shown. One sentence was given the teacher and other sentences were formed by the students. The story was completed.
• A condition was given in the beginning where all participants should converse only in English and avoid mother tongue. Even shy hesitant teachers spoke in English.
• On the second day, the teachers made their presentations. The video was played. Debriefing was done. A template was displayed and an activity was conducted by the teacher.
• A link was provided for feedback form and Assessment test was submitted by all the participants.
• The first level cascading was successfully done.

Remarks

• The participants were enthusiastic and learnt about the plans thoroughly.
• The SRGs insisted on pronunciation, correct stress and intonation while speaking.
• Fluency, usage of appropriate words while responding was emphasised.
• The students apprehension, self-doubt should be kept aside and confidence should be boosted.
• The teacher should be a role model and use correct pronounciation, basic vocabulary, sentence structure, etc.
• While conversing in English,simple classroom English is encouraged
• The students should be encouraged to watch English news, BBC news, Sports Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel.

ENNUM EZHUTHUM - AN OVERVIEW  The Ennum Ezhuthum Mission has been envisioned to improve the quality of teaching and learning in primary classes in Tamil Nadu. The goal of the Ennum Ezhuthum mission is to ensure that all students of classes 1,2, and 3 in government schools in Tamil Nadu can read with comprehension and possess basic arithmetic skills by 2025. The mission also aims to tackle the learning gap caused due to school closures during the COVID-19 lockdown. Towards this, under the academic leadership of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the Ennum Ezhuthum Mission shall commence from the academic year 2022-23 across all districts of Tamil Nadu.  ENNUM EZHUTHUM ORIENTATION TRAINING:  As a part of the mission, orientation training was conducted in three cascaded levels - state, district, and block. The purpose of the training is two-fold:

• To appraise the teachers in the state of the Ennum Ezhuthum Mission, its need and significance
• To train the teachers on the subject-specific level-based teaching-learning process and share guidelines to use the resources provided.

 State Level Orientation Training: The State Level Ennum Ezhuthum Training was held for 6 days from 23rd May 2022 to 28th May 2022 at Pillar Center, Madurai. The training was facilitated by the State Academic Resource Group which consists of subject experts, DIET lecturers, BRTEs, and teachers. The Academic Resource Group created the training demo videos, TLMs, session plans, facilitation checklist, PowerPoint presentations, and other preparatory materials required for the training. During her inaugural speech, the Director, SCERT explained the importance and the need of the Ennum Ezhuthum Mission and encouraged everyone to be a changemaker. The English and Mathematics training that followed this was inaugurated by Ms. Uma Raman and Dr. Ramanujan who are a part of the Expert Committee. Over 380 District KRPs were trained over the course of 3 days. District Level Orientation Training: District-level training was conducted in all the districts of Tamil Nadu on June 1 and June 2, 2022. The District KRPs trained around 4900 Block level KRPs. The mission, vision, and subject content were clearly communicated during this time. Block-level Orientation training: The Block Level training commenced on June 6, 2022 and will go on till June 10, 2022. By the end of this training, primary teachers working in the government schools of Tamil Nadu will be trained on the components of the Ennum Ezhuthum mission. During each of these training sessions, the facilitators made the venue colorful and welcoming by setting up learning corners, the Ennum Ezhuthum kits, and other interesting TLMs. The environment resembled a colorful classroom and the participants were excited and participative.  

• Since 2013, SCERT has been in forefront in integrating technology with education. From the beginning SCERT is committed to promoting learning and making it available with most modern technologies to everyone in the state.
• During the pandemic situation, SCERT went an extra mile to bring textbooks in video format to enable the learners to learn through visual mode.
• SCERT has visualized the contents of all the textbooks read by children of Classes 1 to 12. This resourceful initiative on the part of SCERT, comes as a boon to many students.
• So far, a total of 7434 Video lessons of 30 minutes duration based on these contents have been produced and telecast through Kalvi TV.
• Apart from this, the video lessons were transmitted through 9 private television channels, 4 DTH services and 6 cable TV network channels.
• They were also uploaded in official YouTube channels owned by the department and were made available as teaching materials in schools as well as supplementary materials for teachers to prepare their homework.
• With this, students were able to make notes of what they have learned at their own pace and review any of the chapters and even get their competency level by assessing instantly through the QR code kept in the video throughout the length of the video.
• Through this medium, SCERT is reaching out to you with its new initiative to ensure that every child of the state gets a chance to read all their textbooks in a fast and easy manner. The visuals of textbooks by Class X to XII helped the students to read it as a story, visualize the contents and learn effortlessly.

Objectives

• To ensure coherence and construction of subject specific knowledge.
• To retain content that is more appropriate for concept – to – concept learning.

Highlights

• Based on the recommendations the Expert Group constituted to advice on academic and teaching issues arising due to COVID – 19, State Council of Educational Research and Training undertook the exercise of prioritization of syllabus for all the classes from I – XII without compromising the coverage of all the Learning outcomes.
• As the concepts in the books have a direct casual relationship to the corresponding learning outcomes, the prioritised content are structured in such a way that each concept that has a definite purpose has not been missed.
• The educators identified content that is more appropriate for concept-to-concept learning continuum was retained.
• The team identified the themes on which the prioritised syllabus could be built upon to ensure coherence and construction of subject-specific knowledge in grades I to X.
• The prioritization of syllabus is recommended for classes I – VIII at 50% and for classes IX – XII, at 60% - 65%.

Beneficiaries:

• Prioritised syllabus is developed for all students studying from classes 1 to 12 for the year 2020 – 2021 and 2021-2022.

Outcome:

• SCERT made advances in providing resources and information vital to academic success for all students of classes 1 to 12.
• Learning losses due to COVID – 19 lock down were reduced by the prioritised syllabus.

• It is important for students to understand the content taught during the class. To provide an opportunity for students to practice what they learned in class, Workbooks have been designed for classes 2 - 9.
• They make an excellent supplement to the textbook and provide a solid foundation for independent study.
• These workbooks are not only useful for classroom activities but also to revise what they learned through school work.
• To practice what they have learned, relevant video tutorials were also developed and telecasted through Kalvi TV.
• Kalvi TV an initiative functioning under SCERT of School Education Department, to provide universal access to quality education focusing not only Tamilnadu but for the Global learner through its multiple facets.
• Initially, workbooks based on the learning outcomes have been developed for the students of Classes 1 to 9 during the year 2020-21. These workbooks allow the students to review their conceptual understanding and enhance their critical thinking skills.
• The visual aids and exercises provided in these workbooks make it simple and engaging for children to practice at home.
• To enhance their practice, 59 video lessons for Classes 2 to 9 based on the workbook have been prepared and the video content is telecasted through Kalvi TV.
• Workbooks provide a great opportunity for students to practice what she/he has learned at home. All the workbooks consist of exercises that test students' ability to apply their learning by answering questions that touch upon the various aspects of the subjects.
• The workbooks have been designed keeping in mind the appropriate curriculum standards. The video classes help students to understand each unit and do the activities in the workbooks on their own and hand them over to the subject teachers through alternate modes like WhatsApp and other social networking sites.

• COVID'19 struck the school community midway through the academic year, resulting in a significant loss in learning.
• To find out learning levels, SCERT developed course-specific assessment materials that can be deployed online, that were used when schools were reopened.
• SCERT found this as method of collecting data from a student population for the purpose of making informed decisions.
• The assessment tools were administered in phased to 15,74,715 students of Classes 9 to 12 through online mode using Hi-Tech Labs. To help teachers plan their classes better, the results have been analyzed the performance of students in their math's, English, Science and Social Science grades and other core subjects in higher grades.
• The analysis was done school wise, class wise and subject wise, and given to the teachers to plan their teaching according to the needs of their students.
• Also included are comparative tables for future use, showing percentage of change every year where the fresh data would help teachers plan their classes better.
• The research report on student performance is a result of a massive survey that captured information from students across the state. From this rich data, now it has become easier to find where students need more support.

Objective : 

• The students of classes 10 and 12 hailing from the families without internet and television facilities to attain learning achievement through Radio.

Highlights: 

• The Samakra Siksha and State Council of Educational Research and Training has planned to teach lessons through Radio to reach the students in remote/hilly areas.
• Audio lessons for the classes 10 and 12, are aired through 10 All India Radio Prime stations (Chennai, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Karikkal, Puducherry, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Ooty) in Tamil Nadu.
• In connection with this totally 1168  Radio lessons (15 minutes Duration) 292 days prepared.
• The lessons Broadcasted through All India Radio from Monday to Friday 5.00. P.M. to 6.00 P.M .
• The monthly schedule of Radio lessons, has been given to the students and teachers through School Education Department well in advance.
• The “Radio schedule” as promo have been repeatedly broadcasted All  India Radio and telecasted in the Kalvi Television channel.

Beneficiaries:

• Class 10 and 12 students across the state.

Outcome:

• Enabling the students of classes 10 and 12 to attain learning competencies of the lessons telecast.

Objective:

• To orient select the DIET faculty members on the 11 themes of School Health and Wellness Module.
• To develop training videos on the 11 themes.

Highlights:

• A comprehensive module for School Health and Wellness with 11 themes was launched in five districts of Tamil Nadu namely Vellore, Ariyalur, Karur, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar in collaboration with the State’s National Health Mission.
• An online training for State Resource Group consisting of SCERT and DIET faculty members and personnel of the Health Department was organized by national level experts.
• SCERT has developed video content for all the 11 themes and are uploaded on the TNTP (Tamil Nadu Teachers Platform) portal for teachers to access.

Objective :

• Refresher Course Module’ which covers the basic and important concepts based on critical learning outcomes of the previous classes.

Highlights :

• Based on the common critical learning outcomes of the previous classes, the refresher course module focuses on the retention of basic and important concepts, enabling students to better understand their current concepts.
• The refresher course modules were being used for a period of 45 to 50 days from the day of reopening and later they moved on to the prioritized syllabus content prescribed for the academic year 2021-22.

Beneficiaries:

• 2nd  std to 12th std Students.

Outcomes :

• The materials were predominantly used by the students that found to be bridging the gap by recapitulating basic and important concepts currently taught in the next level.

Objective:

• To expose the students to higher order questions.
• To bridge the learning gap of students due to COVID-19 lock down.

Highlights:

• Every week, the students of Government High and Higher Secondary schools were administered 10 questions in each subject as Basic Quiz on every Saturday and Monday through Hi Tech Labs by EMIS Portal of Samagra Shiksha.
• With regard to the class X, the assessment tools based on Learning Outcomes for the classes IX and X have been developed for Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science by SCERT and DIET faculty members.
• For Tamil and English, questions based on Prose comprehension and language elements have been prepared.
• After administering the Basic Quiz, the teachers discuss the questions and answers with students.
• The students appreciated the higher order questions and clarified their doubts from teachers.
• The district wise 10 toppers were appreciated by the District Collector by issuing certificates.

Beneficiaries:

• Class X students of Government and Aided Schools.

Outcome:

• The students were exposed to higher order questions in all the 5 subjects.

 

• Responding to the changing styles of learning of children in the contemporary information and communication era and to achieve realistic goals envisioned by the Department of School Education,  SCERT has planned to create videos of very short span for all Subjects of Class XII in a phased manner.
• Among 40 Subjects in class XII, 13 General Stream Subjects are chosen in the 1st phase. Every Concept of a subject is mapped with Related Basic Concepts of the subject in lower classes and videos will be created for every Related Basic Concept.
• With the help of latest technological developments, students can access contents in 3D virtual objects / 2D animated contents / recorded sound and video teaching sessions of real teachers relevant to the picture of their school text books at 24/7.
• The learnings out of the content are expected to be reflected by the learner, in real-time situations. As the contents are already broken into microconcepts, assimilating the contents, interlinking the connected concepts will be easy for the students to have joyful learning.

• In the era of technological advancement, it becomes a necessity to adopt Education technology in teaching and learning. As a part of SCERT’s routine, in-service trainings are provided to teachers for their professional and self-development. Continuous professional development is necessary to improve and cope with the demands of the teaching-learning process.
• This would lead teachers to a wider horizon of knowledge and improve their productivity. In order to further encourage teachers to use ICT in their teaching, and to ensure continuous learning during the pandemic, a five-day ICT workshop is being organised through online mode to all teachers using Hi-tech labs.
• Earlier, SCERT conducts training only through face-to-face mode, but this online mode training is another leap, since the teachers were assessed on the same day on all 5 days and their outcomes were analysed to draw meaningful insights.
• During training, each and every participating teacher gets unique question items delivered to their logins. This enabled SCERT to provide pristine question items every time to the participating teachers batch after batch.
• This In-service training is organised through online mode to all teachers from primary to higher secondary. This program covered all 2.24 lakh government school teachers from Primary to Higher Secondary level in phases.
• The training program is designed to impart basic knowledge about computers, internet and its applications, Hi-Tech lab usage and main features of Educational Management Information System.
• Each module of the program contains live sessions, self-explanatory videos, hands on experience, assessment, assignment and feedback. This training program exposed teachers to various features that are available online (free tools) which would help reduce their content preparation time and increase the efficiency of teaching.
